Mavens it has been a long while since I have posted on here, but I am super excited to kick off September with a post on a new small business that has already won me over. Please meet Tracy and Jennie of Sugar Sparks Bakery: CEO’s, founders, moms, bakers and community advocates – let me take you behind the scenes of their incredible journey.
Some of the best ideas are born in the in-between moments — the quiet of a road trip, the laughter of a girls’ weekend, the daydreams we let ourselves have when life slows down. That’s exactly how Sugar Sparks Bakery came to life: in the car rides between New England and New York, where two friends talked about everything from motherhood to mental health, and somewhere along the way, imagined a place of their own. At first, the vision was playful — a café that doubled as a plant shop, maybe even a space where moms could sip cocktails after hours. But as the conversations continued, one passion kept rising to the surface: baking. Baking had always been there — the late-night experiments in the kitchen, the trays of sweets shared with family and friends, the joy of bringing people together with something homemade.
It was during those talks that heritage entered the mix. What if they could weave in flavors that spoke to Jennie’s Puerto Rican roots but also weave in Tracy’s favorites? Coconut, guava, tropical fruits, and spices that carried memories of family gatherings and trips back to the island. What if the desserts could tell a story — not just of sweetness, but of culture, tradition, and identity?
That spark became the foundation of Sugar Sparks Bakery.
When they started sharing their creations at local farmers’ markets, they quickly learned that New England crowds love their classics. While they came excited to introduce matcha macarons, Fruity Pebble cupcakes, or pistachio-and-chocolate confections, what really drew people in were the comfort staples: cupcakes with rich buttercream, cookies that reminded you of childhood, and sweets that felt familiar yet elevated. Still, innovation remains at the heart of Sugar Sparks. Whether experimenting with guava-filled pastries, exploring trendy flavors like pistachio and chocolate, or putting their own twist on timeless favorites, they’ve built a menu that balances tradition and creativity. It’s not about following every trend — it’s about creating desserts that spark joy and conversation.
But beyond the food itself, Sugar Sparks Bakery is about community. It’s about moms carving out a dream for themselves, about honoring family traditions, and about building something that reflects both their New England roots and Puerto Rican heritage. It’s about inviting people to try something new while still feeling at home. This resonated with me so much, because in this Maven journey, connecting people to experiences while still being a loud advocate for community and small business is critical to my brand and how I live in the world.
Every cookie, every cupcake, every sweet from Sugar Sparks carries that story — of friendship, family, and the belief that food can bring people together. So next time you take a bite of one of their creations, know that you’re tasting more than sugar and flour — you’re tasting a dream that started on the open road, now baked fresh for a community they love.
